New Designers 2011

Last night I attended the opening night of new designers, opened by Stephen Webster, the evening was just as fantastic as i remembered it last year.

New Designers is a showcase of the best graduates from every major university in Britain, broken into two weeks, the first being jewellery and precious metals, ceramics, textiles, fashion, accessories and contemporary applied arts, and the second week, graphic design, spatial design, furniture and product design.

The standard of the work was so high, that I'm going back again tomorrow,its on until Saturday and then the second week starts.

Please, if you get a chance, GO! you will be blown away at the quality of the work, not to mention the amount of people exhibiting there. plus its only £14 entry, and you can easily lose hours in there.

One Year On, is also one of the highlights of the show, with people such as Ros Millar, Elizabeth Humble, Myia Bonner and Rebecca Hill’s work leaving me disgusted with their huge amount of talent.

Grupo Bondi ; Concrete Furniture

Grupo Bondi from Buenos Aires, use laser techniques to create these stunning benches and stools, based on aristocratic life they have taken a simple idea and put it outside. The laser engraving is so detailed it looks real, plus the use of the real fabric tag adds another cheeky dimension.

The bench is just fantastic, unique and beautiful, with the use of black concrete i am in awe.

Tony Rif : It Drew Itself

On the initiative of It Drew Itself, the draughtsman Tony Rif could show his talent pen with the hand by creating an illustration in less than one half an hour. Sympathetic nerve and putting well ahead the visual one successful of the artist, this video is to be discovered in the continuation.

Continuum Fashion: n12 3D Printed Bikini

 

Designed by continuum fashion, the 'n12' bikini is the first completely 3D printed, ready-to-wear item of clothing.

The bikini demonstrates the intricacy possible with this technology, as well as the technical challenges of creating a flexible surface. Thousands of circular plates are connected by thin springs, creating a wholly new material that holds its form as well as being flexible.

nylon 12, the source of the bikini's name as well as the material from which it is printed, is well suited for swimwear as it is innately waterproof. The 'n12' was designed using rhino 3D CAD software and a specially written algorithmic script to create the structure of the 3D printed fabric, using a complex 'circle packing' equation on an arbitrarily doubly curved surface. for a smooth responsive pattern, the size of the circles need to respond to curvature and edge conditions of the form; therefore, the aesthetic design is completely derived from the structural design.

Arata Fuchi

Born in Japan and now based in Florence, Italy after studying jewellery at Le Arti Orafe.

His training as an industrial designer has led to experimentation with new methods and techniques. I like to cover silver made pieces with silver powder to make the surfaces rough and irregular. This original technique is called " Pulverization".
