As a silversmith I work almost exclusively in silver, using traditional techniques. My work is characterised by the combining of the precious with the throw-away and the recycled. Each piece is an attempt to redefine our perceptions to everyday objects and question the status that we attach to certain materials.

'ora' concept watch by Alexandros Stasinopoulos

'ora' concept watch by alexandros stasinopoulos

greek designer alexandros stasinopoulos has sent us images of his latest concept watch 'ora'. The 'ora' concept is a study on the field of haute horlogerie.  it focuses on the display of time via an unconventional mode, by replacing the expected dial arrangement found in the vast majority of the mechanical watches with a set of three interwoven tapes – one to
indicate the hour(s), one to indicate the minute(s), and one to indicate the day. The design of the case reflects an 'inside-out' design approach as it was the mechanism’s arrangement that prescribed the overall form in an attempt to enhance its uniqueness and create a distinctive silhouette.

'bijoux' by ryota aoki

ryota aoki's new ceramics laboratory vol. 2 exhibition opened earlier this week at ippodo gallery, New York.

'bijoux' is a white porcelain work produced from a mold, shaped like 2 joined bowls. Each piece is finished by boldly cutting away a part of the original to create a unique work. Aoki infuses the clay with a special glaze he developed. in the kiln the glaze is slowly forced out of the clay to coat the snow white porcelain. bijoux’s secret is its ability to combine an icing flower-like fragility and jewel-like solidity.

Mattijs van bergen: 'blanco' collection

'blanco' collection by mattijs van bergen

Dutch fashion designer mattijs van bergen has created  'blanco' collection for autumn/winter 09/10. mattijs literally drew patterns on his canvas in pen, to tell the collection's story, which gradually developed into intricate pleating details, constantly playing with optical illusion. 'blanco' is currently on display during dutch design double in amsterdam. The festival will run until october 11, 2009.

Suppose design office: cafe la miell

Cafe la miell by suppose design office is located in the heart of niihama city in ehime. The old cafe la miell was unable to accommodate large numbers of customers with its
seating capacity,  so plans were made to open up a new cafe  across the street that would be able to seat eighty.

For the design they proposed to make use of the fact that the site was - one meter lower than street level and rather than a two story cafe, make a split level with floors at the building's own base level and street level, beams are placed in a rhythmic way which follows the two levels, and are held up with steel and concrete posts spread out, creating a kind of dialogue between space and structure. Outside, pebbles are spread out on the beam slabs to match the landscape and the distinctive shape.

Solar phone

image

Sharp has created the first mobile phone with a built-in solar panel. the device is a clam-shell style phone
that yields one minute of  talk time or  two hours of standby with 10 minutes under the sun. if left outside
long enough, the battery can be fully replenished. a small animation on the phone’s screen tells users how
full the battery is. users also don’t have to worry about leaving their phone outside in the rain, since the
design of the case makes it waterproof. by having the built-in solar panels, the phone allows users to
charge up on the go and is also a greener option since the energy isn’t coming from an outlet.the phone
was only released in japan this year, but the built-in solar panel design may be coming to a device near you.

Another Scott Jarvie

The One Cut Chair is water jet cut from a single sheet of plywood. A single continuous cut is made to produce the features that will form the seating surface and lumbar support when folded out. Thus the chair can be manufactured quickly and easily, eliminating the need for labour intensive and time consuming methods associated with traditional furniture construction. The design aims to make the most economical use of the material while minimising the energy required for manufacture. By small adjustments to the process the chair can be subtly altered to offer a variety of appearances and seating positions.
